U.S. Says It Conducted Strikes on Iranian Military Sites Following Alleged Attack on Commercial Vessel

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that U.S. forces carried out military strikes against targets in Iran on June 26, describing the operation as a response to what it said was an Iranian attack on a commercial cargo vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz the previous day.

According to CENTCOM, U.S. aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar sites. The command said the strikes were conducted after Iran allegedly targeted the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely with a one-way attack drone on June 25 while the vessel was exiting the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast.

CENTCOM stated that the alleged attack on the commercial vessel constituted "unwarranted aggression" and violated an existing ceasefire agreement. It further asserted that the incident undermined freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime trade routes.

The U.S. military also said it continues to coordinate safe passage and provide support for commercial vessels transiting the strait. CENTCOM added that U.S. forces remain deployed in the region to help ensure that the terms of the agreement with Iran are maintained.
