Barzani Grand Mosque Foundation Stone Laid in Erbil, Aiming to Become a Regional Landmark
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani is set to lay the foundation stone on Sunday for the Barzani Grand Mosque in Erbil, a major architectural and cultural project planned to become one of the region’s most significant landmarks.
Covering more than two million square meters, the complex is designed as more than a place of worship, combining a mosque, cultural facilities, gardens, a museum, library, conference center, and public spaces.
The project’s design draws inspiration from Kurdish heritage, particularly the traditional Rashmall tent, blending Islamic architecture with Kurdish cultural identity. It is named in honor of Mulla Mustafa Barzani, a central figure in modern Kurdish history.
The mosque is planned to include a large prayer hall, four minarets with observation areas, extensive green spaces, and features aimed at attracting visitors. Developers say the complex will include one of the world’s largest domes, a large handmade carpet, and a major public park with thousands of trees.
The project reflects the Kurdistan Region’s broader efforts to develop cultural, tourism, and urban infrastructure while preserving its historical identity.
