Iran Says Strait of Hormuz Transit Must Be Coordinated with Tehran, Warns Against Unilateral Shipping Arrangements

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on Friday that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz cannot be guaranteed under what he described as "ambiguous arrangements" or alternative maritime routes established without Tehran's involvement as a coastal state.

Writing on the social media platform X, Gharibabadi said any credible framework governing navigation through the strategically vital waterway must be coordinated with Iran and implemented in accordance with Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the United States.

"Safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz cannot be guaranteed with ambiguous arrangements, parallel routes, or decision-making outside Iran's considerations as a coastal state," he wrote.

He warned that if these conditions are not met, Iran would suspend any designated parallel shipping routes.

Earlier on Friday, Iran's Foreign Ministry issued a statement emphasizing that the Strait of Hormuz lies within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman. The ministry said the management of maritime traffic through the waterway would be governed by Article 5 of the memorandum of understanding.

The statement came in response to a joint communiqué issued by the United States and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and reaffirmed support for "free, unconditional, and unrestricted navigation" through the strategic shipping lane.

The US-GCC communiqué also rejected "any tolls, fees, or attempts to assert control" over the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iranian officials, the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the United States officially entered into force on June 18 after being electronically signed by the presidents of both countries.
