Kurdish Leaders Defend Region's Constitutional Status Amid Political Controversy

The Kurdistan Region's political leadership, constitutional experts, and minority representatives have strongly defended the Region's constitutional status following controversial remarks by New Generation Movement leader Shaswar Abdulwahid, warning against rhetoric they say threatens Kurdistan's legal and historical foundations.

Veteran Kurdish politician Mohammed Haji Mahmoud stressed that the Kurdistan Region was established through decades of sacrifice rather than political negotiations. "The political entity of the Region was built with the blood of martyrs, and we will protect it with blood," he said, emphasizing that the Region's status is guaranteed by the Iraqi Constitution and the sacrifices of the Peshmerga.

Former KDP Branch 10 head Rebwar Babkayi sharply criticized Abdulwahid, describing his statements as "intellectual terrorism" and arguing that attacks on the Region's constitutional status undermine the sacrifices made by generations of Kurds. He maintained that the Kurdistan Region belongs to its people and the legacy of its martyrs, not to any political party or individual.

In Baghdad, Iraqi parliament member Dr. Ashwaq Jaf reaffirmed that the Kurdistan Region's autonomy is protected under Article 117 of the Iraqi Constitution. She warned that weakening the Region would endanger Iraq's federal democratic system and risk a return to centralized rule.

Minority communities also voiced support for preserving the Region's status. The Christian Alliance in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region described Kurdistan as a safe haven for Christians and other minorities, highlighting its role in protecting religious freedom and coexistence. Turkmen Reform Party Deputy Leader Muna Qahwachi likewise said the Region was built through struggle and sacrifice rather than political concessions.

The political debate comes as criticism continues over unresolved investment disputes linked to the Chavy Land project, where thousands of investors are still awaiting compensation. Some political observers argue that recent opposition alliances could further complicate accountability efforts.

As discussions continue over forming the Kurdistan Regional Government's next cabinet, Kurdish leaders insist that the Region's constitutional legitimacy, democratic institutions, and role as a center of stability and coexistence remain non-negotiable.
