KDP Leadership Calls for Urgent Resolution to KRG Government Deadlock, Emphasizes Kurdish Unity in Baghdad Talks

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Central Committee, chaired by President Masoud Barzani, convened on Thursday to assess the political landscape, highlighting significant concerns over the prolonged failure to form a new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

In a meeting focused on domestic stagnation, Iraqi affairs, and regional dynamics, the party leadership identified the inability to convene the Kurdistan Parliament and establish the KRG’s 10th cabinet as a major obstacle to progress, despite considerable time passing since last year’s regional elections.

According to an official statement, the committee affirmed that ongoing dialogues aim to create a "broad-based government." While acknowledging some parties' choice to remain in opposition, the KDP stated that agreements based on "electoral merit" are still possible. The leadership stressed that the Kurdistan Region's internal issues must be resolved independently from its disputes with the federal government in Baghdad, underscoring the priority of tackling domestic challenges first.

The committee celebrated the results of the November 11 Iraqi parliamentary elections as a "major victory" for the KDP, which garnered over 1.1 million votes nationwide, securing a robust bloc in the Council of Representatives. The leadership extended gratitude to its members, government bodies, and security forces for the success of its electoral list.

Newly elected KDP representatives were instructed to faithfully serve their constituents in Baghdad, contribute to fair legislation, and diligently oversee the federal government's performance.

On critical negotiations with Baghdad, the meeting underscored the necessity for all Kurdish parties to present a unified front. Key objectives include amending the electoral law and achieving a permanent resolution on the Kurdistan Region’s budget and public sector salaries within Iraq’s constitutional framework. To advance these talks, the KDP appointed a high-level delegation to lead negotiations.

The KDP also addressed wider regional affairs, welcoming recent peace efforts by Turkey regarding the Kurdish issue and expressing hope for positive regional reverberations. Regarding Syria, the committee voiced optimism for stability and emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of all communities amid ongoing changes.

The meeting concluded with reports from provincial bureaus on organizational activities and challenges. The Central Committee agreed on measures to strengthen party structures, aiming to enhance its role as a bridge between the public and decision-makers. Proposals were approved to improve the party's responsiveness to citizen needs.
