Kuwait reports damage to power and desalination plant after Iranian missile and drone attack

Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water said Friday that an Iranian missile and drone attack damaged one of the country’s power generation and water desalination plants, triggering a fire that affected a large number of electricity generation units.

In a statement, the ministry described the assault as a “sinful Iranian aggression targeting the State of Kuwait,” adding that emergency plans were immediately activated to contain the incident, mitigate its effects, and preserve the stability of the national electrical grid.

The ministry urged citizens to “rationalize consumption” during the crisis and support efforts to rehabilitate the damaged facilities as quickly as possible.

The attack raised concerns over potential power shortages in Kuwait, where summer temperatures frequently approach 50 degrees Celsius and air conditioning is essential for much of the population.

Earlier Friday, Kuwait’s armed forces said the country’s air defenses were “engaging hostile missile and drone attacks” following what they called Iranian aggression. On Thursday, the Kuwaiti Defense Ministry reported intercepting 32 hostile drones that had entered Kuwaiti airspace from Iran.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed launching what it called a “swift drone and missile strike” on Kuwait. The IRGC claimed it had destroyed HIMARS launchers, missiles, and several deployment sites of American forces, as well as positions used by what it described as the “mercenaries” of the United States and Israel. It also asserted that a large number of those forces had been killed.

In a separate statement, the IRGC said it had targeted U.S. deployment sites and logistical support centers in Kuwait using one-way drones, describing the attacks as retaliation for American strikes on Iran’s “urban and civilian infrastructure.”
