Kurdish girl becomes member of Icelandic parliament for first time
The 22-year-old Kurdish girl is the first Kurd and the fifth youngest MP in Iceland.
Lenya Rún Taha Karim was born on December 18 to a Kurdish parent in the town of Kópavogur Iceland, was third on the libertarian Pirate Party’s list for the Reykjavík North districtand is now the youngest MP in Iceland.
Lenya told Kurdistan24 that since a senior member of parliament needed a replacement, she has been appointed to the position and now holds a parliamentary seat.
"The most important issue in the parliament that I have to note is the judiciary, I want to highlight the legal aspects of this issue and I want to make changes in the laws that cover sexual assault cases; in order to make victims of sexual assault feel safe and to take care of their cases in a timely and professional manner." Lanya said.
Lenya 's father immigrated to Iceland in 1993 and her mother in 1996, her family returned to Kurdistan in 2013 and returned to Iceland after 3 years.
