KDP’s Vala Fareed Elected as Kurdistan Parliament Speaker
MP Fareed received 62 votes while her opponent from the New Generation Movement received only eight votes.
Her nomination by the KDP came after the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) refused to attend today’s decisive session as it failed to reach a political agreement with the KDP.
However, KDP’s Hemin Hawrami made it clear that the nomination of MP Fareed is solely to fill the position, and that the new speaker from his party will step down whenever a political agreement is reached with the PUK to send its nominee.
Vala Fareed is the first woman taking the position of Kurdistan parliament speaker.
