Work Continues on the IQD 139 Billion Strategic Goptapa–Chamchamal Water Project

Work on the Goptapa–Chamchamal Water Project, part of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) strategic programme to address water shortages and provide residents of Aghjalar, Chamchamal, Takya, and surrounding villages with 3,400 cubic metres of water every hour, is progressing steadily, with just over one-third (40 percent) of the Project already complete.

Workers are currently laying the main water transmission pipeline (across 10km), installing power lines and pylons, and constructing pumping stations and water treatment and filtration units. Concrete works on two large water storage reservoirs are also in the final stages of construction and will, when complete, respectively operate at capacities of 10,000 and 20,000 cubic metres.

The Project is currently scheduled to be completed in the middle of next year (13 June 2027), at a projected cost of IQD 139.51 billion.
