KRG Ministry of Education Launches Initiative to Standardize Kurdish Orthography Across AI Systems
In an effort to preserve linguistic integrity in the digital era, the Ministry of Education of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has introduced a standardized method for training artificial intelligence models to adhere to the region’s unified Kurdish orthography.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry's Orthography and Standardization Committee and formally endorsed by the Kurdish Academy, aims to correct spelling inconsistencies generated by popular chatbots such as Gemini and ChatGPT. Because these models are trained on varied and unverified online texts, they frequently produce Kurdish content that deviates from established academic standards.
To remedy this, the General Directorate of Curriculum Programs has released a public three-step guide designed to allow users to directly "teach" standard spelling conventions to AI systems:
1.Download the Official Orthography Summary:Step 1.Users are directed to access a dedicated link provided by the Ministry of Education to download a PDF document titled "Summary of the Ministry of Education's Orthography."
2.Upload and Verify Comprehension:Step 2.The downloaded file must be uploaded into the active chat window of the AI system. The user must include a precise prompt instructing the chatbot to read the document carefully, retain its rules, and summarize them back to the user to confirm accurate comprehension.
3.Enforce Absolute Compliance:Step 3.Users must explicitly instruct the AI system to remain 100% committed to the provided orthographic rules for any subsequent tasks, including translation, content editing, or text formatting.
"Because AI models have historical training data pulling from vast, conflicting internet sources, they may not permanently alter their output on the first try," a ministry representative noted. "However, consistent application of these custom instructions will gradually calibrate the systems to the standardized orthography."
Ministry officials stressed that as generative artificial intelligence becomes deeply integrated into everyday writing, reading, and administrative translations, safeguarding the authenticity and unity of the Kurdish language remains a critical cultural priority.
