Dozens of Strategic Water Projects Implemented to Strengthen Water Security in the Kurdistan Region

As part of its ongoing efforts to ensure access to clean drinking water and address water shortages, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has launched a series of major strategic water projects across the Kurdistan Region.

These projects—some completed, others nearing completion, and several in the early stages of implementation—have received investments totalling trillions of Iraqi dinars (IQD). Together, they are being implemented to supply hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of drinking water each day, ensuring a reliable water supply for generations to come.

Completed Water Projects

The largest completed initiative is the Erbil Emergency Water Project, with a budget of IQD 720 billion. This project supplies 480,000 cubic metres of drinking water each day, addressing Erbil's water needs and helping to secure the city's water supply for decades.

Other completed projects include:

Qushtapa Water Project: Completed at a cost of IQD 222 billion, with a daily production capacity of 72,000 cubic metres.
Faida Water Project (Duhok): Completed with a budget of IQD 50 billion, with a daily production capacity of 72,000 cubic metres.
Pirmam and Surrounding Areas Water Project: Completed at a cost of IQD 34.7 billion, with a daily production capacity of 9,600 cubic metres.

Projects Nearing Completion

Several major projects are in the final stages of implementation:

Water Project for 51 Villages in the Barzan Area: 98% complete, with a budget of IQD 30.1 billion and a daily production capacity of 24,000 cubic metres.
Erbil Water Network (411 km): 95% complete, with a budget of IQD 25 billion.
Ranya-Chwarqurna-Hajiawa Water Project: 70% complete, with a budget of IQD 36.7 billion and a daily supply capacity of 72,000 cubic metres.
Akre Water Project: 67% complete, with a budget of IQD 41.1 billion and a daily supply capacity of 72,000 cubic metres.
Darbandikhan Water Project: 65% complete, with a budget of IQD 25 billion and a daily supply capacity of 24,000 cubic metres.

New Strategic Projects

Several other large-scale projects are currently either in their initial stages or progressing steadily:

Goptapa-Chamchamal Water Project: 37% complete, with a budget of IQD 101 billion and a daily supply capacity of 60,000 cubic metres.
Bardarash Water Project: 10% complete, with a budget of IQD 428 billion. Upon completion, it will supply 72,000 cubic metres of water each day.
Dukan-Slemani 3 Water Project: A strategic project currently in its early stages, with a budget of IQD 551 billion and a daily supply capacity of 240,000 cubic metres.

Wastewater Treatment Projects

In addition to expanding access to drinking water, the KRG is also investing in wastewater treatment to protect the environment and improve wastewater management. Two major projects are currently under way:

Wastewater Treatment Project (Phase 1): Budgeted at USD 200 million, with the capacity to treat 52,500 cubic metres of wastewater each day.
Wastewater Treatment Project (Phase 2): Budgeted at USD 579 million, with the capacity to treat 210,000 cubic metres of wastewater each day. The project is currently 4% complete.
These projects will fundamentally change the Kurdistan Region’s water and wastewater sectors and strengthen water security for present and future generations.
