Iraq Completes First Multimodal Freight Shipment Under TIR System

Iraq has successfully completed its first multimodal freight shipment under the International Road Transport (TIR) system, marking a significant step in strengthening the country's role as a regional trade and transit hub.

According to the Iraqi Ministry of Transport, the shipment originated from Aqaba Port in Jordan and was transported by road through Jordanian and Iraqi territory before arriving at Umm Qasr Port in southern Iraq. From there, the cargo was transferred to a maritime route and shipped to Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates.

Director General of the Land Transport Department, Murtadha Al-Shahmani, said the operation was carried out under the supervision of the General Company for Land Transport and the Ministry's TIR Coordination Office. The shipment was completed in cooperation with the International Road Transport Union (IRU), the General Commission of Customs, and the General Company for Ports of Iraq.

Al-Shahmani described the achievement as an important milestone in Iraq’s efforts to modernize its transport and logistics sector and enhance connectivity between regional markets.

The successful shipment follows Iraq’s recent activation of the TIR system, an internationally recognized customs transit framework designed to facilitate the movement of goods across borders while reducing transit times and administrative procedures.

Earlier this month, officials from the Ministry of Transport announced that Iraq had fully implemented the TIR system, opening seven international trade corridors over the past eight months. The ministry also reported that more than 1,000 cross-border freight movements had been completed under the system during that period.
