Venezuelan authorities have declared a state of emergency after two powerful earthquakes struck central parts of the country within seconds of each other, causing widespread destruction and significant loss of life.

According to acting President Rodriguez, at least 164 people have been killed and 971 others injured following the twin earthquakes. The first quake measured 7.2 magnitude, while the second, stronger tremor registered 7.5 magnitude, sending residents fleeing from buildings as the ground shook violently.

The earthquakes struck central Venezuela and were felt strongly in the capital, Caracas, where extensive damage has been reported. Emergency services continue to search through collapsed structures for survivors, while hospitals are struggling to cope with the large number of casualties.

Severe destruction has also been reported in the neighboring state of La Guaira, where roads, homes, and public infrastructure have suffered significant damage. Rescue teams, military personnel, and volunteers have been deployed across the affected regions to assist victims and assess the extent of the disaster.

In a national address, acting President Rodriguez expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and announced a nationwide state of emergency to facilitate rescue operations and the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Authorities have warned that aftershocks may continue in the coming days and urged residents to remain alert and follow official safety instructions. International organizations and neighboring countries have begun offering support as Venezuela confronts one of its deadliest natural disasters in recent years.
