Kurdistan's "Yellow Gold" Harvest Expected to Surpass 200,000 Tons
Farmers across the Nawkor Plain in Bardarash district have begun harvesting what many are calling this year's "yellow gold," as potato production in the districts of Akre, Bardarash, and Sheikhan is expected to exceed 200,000 tons.
More than 18,000 dunams of land were planted with potatoes this season in one of the Kurdistan Region's most productive agricultural areas. Harvesting has been underway for two weeks, supported by specialized machinery and over 170 seasonal workers.
Despite some crop losses caused by heavy rainfall, farmers say the remaining harvest has delivered excellent yields and high-quality potatoes with exceptional color and size. Much of the produce will be supplied to markets in Baghdad and Basra, while part will be stored in warehouses.
Local growers have called on authorities to restrict potato imports during the harvest season to protect domestic producers from falling prices.
