Prime Minister Masrour Barzani Inaugurates Babylon Hanging Gardens Park in Erbil
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani officially inaugurated the Babylon Hanging Gardens Park (Ganatha D Babel Park) in Erbil's Ankawa district on Tuesday, marking the opening of one of the largest and most modern public recreational projects in the Kurdistan Region.
Spanning more than 60,000 square meters, the park was developed as part of the Kurdistan Regional Government's efforts to expand green spaces, promote environmental sustainability, and enhance tourism and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.
The project was completed within 20 months after Prime Minister Barzani laid its foundation stone in October 2024. The new park combines environmental, cultural, and leisure facilities and is expected to become a major landmark in the Kurdistan Region's capital.
One of the park's most striking features is a 63-meter-high flagpole carrying the Kurdistan flag, making it the tallest such structure in Iraq. More than 50 additional Kurdistan flags have been installed across the site, creating a distinctive visual identity for the park.
The development includes three main entrances linking the Ankawa district with the Erbil Avenue area, improving accessibility for visitors. Other notable features include a seven-meter-high spiral bridge, an underground pedestrian tunnel, extensive green areas, and a modern padel court built to international standards.
Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Barzani highlighted the significance of the project and the spirit of community behind it.
"Today, the Babylon Hanging Gardens Park has been inaugurated in Ankawa district, which spans over 60,000 square meters and was constructed through community-led efforts," he said in a post on X.
The Prime Minister described Ankawa as a symbol of coexistence and unity, expressing hope that the park would become a gathering place where people can relax and spend quality time together.
"I am very pleased to see our country progressing day by day and becoming a better place. Whatever is in our hands, together with you, we strive to build a healthier community for ourselves and our visitors," Barzani added.
Today we opened the Hanging Gardens of Babylon Park in Ankawa district. Ankawa has always been a symbol of coexistence, and we hope this park will become a place for everyone to enjoy time together.
