IAEA Confirms Inspections of Iranian Nuclear Sites as Tehran Hails US Deal as ‘Declaration of Defeat’

The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog has confirmed that inspectors will be granted access to Iran’s nuclear facilities under the terms of a newly reached interim agreement between Tehran and Washington, marking a significant development in efforts to ease tensions following weeks of regional conflict.

The announcement by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) appears to contrast with earlier statements from both Iranian and American officials, who had provided differing accounts regarding the agency’s future role and access to nuclear sites damaged during recent military strikes.

According to the IAEA chief, inspection teams will visit Iranian nuclear facilities as part of the monitoring and verification mechanisms included in the Iran-US interim agreement. The move is intended to restore transparency and ensure compliance with international nuclear commitments.

Meanwhile, Iran’s chief negotiator welcomed the agreement but framed it as a political victory for Tehran. In remarks following the announcement, he described the accord as “America’s declaration of defeat,” arguing that Washington had failed to achieve its objectives through pressure and military action and was ultimately compelled to return to diplomacy.

The interim agreement follows a period of heightened tensions that included military exchanges, economic pressure, and concerns over the future of Iran’s nuclear program. Negotiations held in Switzerland reportedly focused on sanctions relief, nuclear monitoring, regional security, and measures aimed at preventing further escalation.

While both sides have presented the agreement as a step toward stability, significant differences remain over the interpretation of key provisions, including the extent of international inspections and the timeline for sanctions relief.

At the same time, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio continued his diplomatic tour of Gulf countries, meeting regional leaders to discuss the implementation of the agreement and broader security issues in the Middle East. Washington has sought support from its regional partners to maintain stability and encourage continued diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States.
