Iraqi Parliamentary Finance Committee Meets with SOMO Regarding Kurdistan Oil Issue

The Finance Committee of the Iraqi Parliament convened a crucial meeting with SOMO (State Oil Marketing Organization) to address concerns surrounding the delivery of oil from the Kurdistan Region, a matter of significant economic and political importance.

Kurdistan24 correspondent, Shwan Jabari, reporting from Baghdad, confirmed that the Finance Committee had summoned SOMO to provide detailed information regarding the flow of oil from the Kurdistan Region to the central government. Notably, all members of the Finance Committee were in attendance at this pivotal gathering.

This meeting comes against the backdrop of ongoing discussions regarding the allocation of oil revenues and responsibilities between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government of Iraq.

Since June of this year, the KRG has been delivering a substantial 85,000 barrels of oil per day to the federal government in accordance with their agreements. However, tensions have risen over the financial obligations tied to this transaction.

In a statement issued on September 11, 2023, the Ministry of Natural Resources emphasized the legal framework, stating, "According to the budget law, the total cost of oil production and transportation in the Kurdistan Region is the responsibility of the Iraqi government, and it is required to cover the expenses."

This development underscores the importance of reaching a clear and mutually beneficial resolution on the oil-related issues between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government. As discussions continue, stakeholders on both sides will be closely watching for further updates and potential breakthroughs in this critical matter.
