Macron’s Letter to President Barzani: France Committed to Supporting Kurdistan
ERBIL — French President Emmanuel Macron has sent an official letter to Nechirvan Barzani to congratulate him on his presidency, reiterating France’s support for the Kurdistan Region.

Macron’s letter was delivered to President Barzani on Thursday by French consul general in Erbil, only a few days after Barzani was elected president by the parliament.

Macron sheds light on the current situation in Iraq and the wider region, noting that Barzani’s role as the president of Kurdistan Region will be crucial for the ongoing process of reconciliation and rehabilitation across Iraq.

The French president once again thanked the Kurdish Peshmerga forces for making the ultimate sacrifice to defeat the Islamic State (IS), and the Kurdistan Region for hosting millions of desperate people who escaped the jihadists group after 2014.

He also welcomed the progress in talks between Erbil and Baghdad, reiterating France’s support for continued efforts to address the remaining issues.

The French president also expressed his country’s willingness to further strengthen ties with Kurdistan Region, especially in the areas of economy, culture, and education.
