Biography of New Kurdistan Region PM Masrour Barzani
ERBIL — Masrour Barzani was named the new Prime Minister of Kurdistan Region on Tuesday after 87 lawmakers out of 97 in attendance approved his candidacy during a parliamentary session in Erbil.

Barzani will later be tasked by the president of Kurdistan Region to form the new cabinet within 30 days.

Masrour Barzani was born in 1969 in Balakayati region of Erbil.
In 1985, when he was 16 years old, he joined the Peshmerga forces of Kurdistan.
He graduated from high school in 1987 while in Iran.
As a young man among the Peshmerga, he took part in the 1991’s uprising of Kurdistan against the Baath Regime.
Barzani earned a degree in International Studies at the American University in Washington DC.
He earned his MA in Peace and Conflict Resolutions from the same university.
Barzani returned to Kurdistan in 1998.
During the 12th congress of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, he was elected to the Central Committee.
In 2010, he was elected to the Leadership Council and then selected as a KDP Politburo member.
He was appointed as the Chancellor of Kurdistan Region Security Council in 2012.
He established the Barzani Charity Foundation in 2005, which has played a remarkable role in the past few years to host and shelter millions of Iraqi IDPs and Syrian Refugees.
Barzani is the founder and the head of board of trustees at the American University of Kurdistan (AUK) in Duhok.
He speaks Kurdish, English, Arabic, and Persian.
He is married, and he has three sons and a daughter.
