ERBIL - A Peshmerga commander passed away on Sunday, only three days after he was injured in an accident during a military training exercise.

Earlier on Thursday, Commander Askandar Gardi and two other Peshmerga fighters were wounded after a mortar round went off due to a technical mistake with Gardi sustaining severe injuries.

The incident took place at a training camp for the elite forces of Zeravani Peshmerga troops.

Talking to BasNews, Adnan Gardi, a cousin of Askandar Gardi, said that the Peshmerga commander had been sent to Jordan for medical treatment, but that he passed away on Sunday as a result of his critical medical condition.

He further pointed out that his body will be brought back to the Kurdistan Region after the legal procedures are taken and will be buried in a special ceremony.
