Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), met Austria’s newly appointed ambassador to Iraq, Axel Weich, in Erbil on Sunday to discuss political and security developments in Iraq, regional affairs and ways to strengthen ties between the Kurdistan Region and Austria.

According to a statement from the Barzani Headquarters, the meeting covered the conclusion of the international coalition forces’ mission in Iraq and the challenges facing the country’s stability, as well as recent political developments in Iraq and the wider region.

Barzani expressed support for the Iraqi prime minister’s efforts to address the country’s challenges and preserve stability, the statement said.

The meeting also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Austria and the Kurdistan Region. Both sides stressed the importance of expanding cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations.

Barzani recalled Austria’s support for the Kurdish people during difficult periods of the Kurdish revolution and expressed his appreciation to the Austrian government and people for their solidarity and assistance.

Economic cooperation and tourism were also discussed, with the two sides exploring opportunities to broaden bilateral ties in these sectors.

Weich’s visit comes as Austria maintains diplomatic engagement with Iraq amid ongoing political and security developments following the conclusion of the international coalition’s military mission in the country.

The meeting also highlighted the Kurdistan Region’s interest in expanding economic and tourism cooperation with European partners, particularly as Erbil seeks to strengthen its international relations and attract greater investment and visitors.
