The strategic KRG (Kurdistan Regional Government) Dukan–Slemani 3 Water Project, which seeks to address water shortages, is now designed and is in the first phase (of three) of implementation.

A main reservoir with a capacity of 40,000 m3  will be constructed and directly connected to Slemani’s water network, which will then be extended to residential developments and neighbourhoods across the city.

Bakhtiyar Tahir, director of the Slemani Water Directorate, told the Department of Media and Information: “[The Project] will cover all neighbourhoods and residential areas of Slemani through the comprehensive integration of the city’s water networks, ensuring that no neighbourhood or residential area is left facing water shortages.”

This includes neighbourhoods who draw their drinking water in the spring period: in helping to maintain the flow of Sarchnar Spring in the dry season, the Project will ensure they do not experience shortages at this time.

By the end of the first phase, 10,000 m3 of clean drinking water will be supplied every hour, in accordance with the highest international standards. When complete, the Project, entirely constructed by a local workforce, will produce 20,000 m3 of clean water every hour, establishing a long-term solution to Slemani water shortages for decades to come.
