US President Donald Trump said Thursday that significant progress has been made toward establishing a permanent US Army base in Poland, with the location potentially to be announced soon.

Trump credited Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s leadership for advancing discussions over the proposed military facility, describing the move as a potentially historic step for the US-Polish alliance.

Poland revealed in August that it was negotiating with Washington over establishing a permanent US military presence on Polish territory. Polish Deputy Defense Minister Pawel Zalewski said at the time that the initial stage of the process had already been completed and that there was strong political support for the proposal.

Nawrocki welcomed Trump’s announcement, saying Poland was prepared to continue efforts to strengthen defense cooperation with the United States. He also pledged that the Polish government would seek to provide a suitable location for the proposed base.

The announcement comes as the Trump administration is conducting a broader review of the US military presence in Europe, raising concerns among some European allies about the possibility of reductions in American forces on the continent.

Poland has sought a stronger permanent US and NATO presence along NATO’s eastern flank since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Nearly 10,000 US troops are currently stationed in Poland, although most are deployed on a rotational basis rather than permanently.

Poland’s geographic position, bordering both Ukraine and NATO’s eastern frontier with Russia and Belarus, has made the country a central part of the alliance’s regional defense strategy. Warsaw has also significantly increased its defense spending in recent years.

The proposed permanent US base would further deepen military cooperation between Washington and Warsaw, although details including the location, size and operational structure of the facility have yet to be announced.
