Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Italy’s Ambassador to Iraq, Niccolò Fontana, and his accompanying delegation in Erbil, where they discussed ways to strengthen relations and expand cooperation between Italy, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region.

During the meeting, President Barzani expressed the Kurdistan Region’s appreciation for Italy’s continued support within the framework of the Global Coalition, as well as its contributions in the military, humanitarian, development, and archaeological fields.

Ambassador Fontana reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to deepening its relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and expanding cooperation across various sectors. He also stressed the importance Italy attaches to the security and stability of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, reaffirming Rome’s continued support in this regard.

The two sides also exchanged views on Iraq’s internal political situation, developments in the Kurdistan Region, and relations between Erbil and Baghdad. Regional developments and their implications for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region were also discussed.

Tommaso Sansone, Italy’s Consul General in Erbil, also attended the meeting.
