Iraq has risen to 10th place among the largest suppliers of crude oil to the United States, with Iraqi shipments increasing last week as regional security concerns and disruptions to key energy routes continue to affect global oil markets.

According to figures released Sunday by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), Iraq supplied the United States with an average of 46,000 barrels of crude oil per day during the past week, up from 38,000 barrels per day the previous week.

Canada remained the largest supplier to the US, with exports averaging 3.926 million barrels per day, followed by Venezuela with 599,000 barrels, Saudi Arabia with 347,000, Mexico with 297,000, and Colombia with 239,000 barrels per day.

Brazil ranked sixth with 235,000 barrels per day, followed by Nigeria with 232,000, Argentina with 173,000, and Guyana with 65,000 barrels per day. Iraq ranked 10th with 46,000 barrels per day.

The increase comes after Iraqi crude shipments to the US fell to zero in recent weeks amid regional security complications and disruptions affecting energy routes through the Strait of Hormuz.

The development comes as Baghdad seeks to diversify Iraq’s crude export routes and reduce the country’s reliance on vulnerable regional waterways.

Iraqi Oil Minister Bassem Mohammed Khudhir said on September 8 that Iraq’s oil exports had surpassed three million barrels per day, as the government works to diversify export channels and strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure.

Khudhir also said the government was continuing efforts to secure domestic supplies of refined petroleum products while increasing Iraq’s ability to rely on its own resources and capabilities.

Among the strategic projects under consideration is an oil-export route linking Basra with Faysh-Khabur, which would provide Iraq with an additional pathway for transporting crude through Türkiye.

The Oil Ministry has also outlined plans to extend an oil pipeline from Basra to Faysh-Khabur and onward to Türkiye and Syria’s Banias port, as part of broader efforts to reduce risks to Iraq’s existing export routes.

Iraq is seeking to increase crude oil exports to five million barrels per day in the future while also expanding investment in natural gas as part of its broader energy strategy.
