An attack on a Turkmen Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) checkpoint in Pirde early Thursday killed one fighter and critically wounded another, according to a local police source.

The shooting took place at around 2 a.m. inside the town, the source told Kurdistan 24. Police said two assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire on the checkpoint before fleeing the scene to an unknown destination.

The slain fighter was identified as Ali Bahjat Hamid, while Junaid Ismat Bahjat sustained critical injuries, according to police.

The attack comes amid a broader escalation involving PMF positions in several parts of Iraq during the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

On July 29, the PMF said that joint US-Saudi airstrikes had targeted its official facilities in Baghdad, Wasit, Nineveh, Basra, Kirkuk, Karbala and Diyala. The group reported that at least 20 of its members were killed and 32 others wounded in the strikes.

The PMF also said that several of its facilities, vehicles, military equipment and other property were damaged. It added that specialized committees had been formed to document the destruction and assess the full extent of the losses.

The group described the reported casualty figures as preliminary, warning that the number could rise as search and field assessment operations continued.

The July 29 strikes also prompted a response from the Nineveh Provincial Council, which expressed concern over attacks on sites in the province and the resulting casualties.

The council condemned what it described as attacks undermining the security and sovereignty of Nineveh and Iraq. At the same time, it rejected the use of the province as a base for attacks against neighboring countries or for operations targeting them.

The council said its position was aimed at protecting Iraq’s national interests and contributing to regional stability. It also extended condolences to the families of those killed and wished the wounded a swift recovery.
