Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan on Friday called on Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş to invite Syrian Kurdish leaders Mazloum Abdi and Ilham Ahmed to Türkiye, saying their visit could help strengthen dialogue and regional ties.

Speaking at a press conference after a meeting of the party’s Central Executive Board, Doğan said inviting the two figures would contribute to ongoing efforts to promote peace and dialogue in the region.

“They should come. They should be invited. As the DEM Party, we are making such a call,” Doğan said.

Doğan specifically urged Parliament Speaker Kurtulmuş to invite Ilham Ahmed, whom she said could soon become a member of the Syrian parliament. She said developing relations with Ahmed would help strengthen friendship and political dialogue.

The DEM Party spokesperson also welcomed recent developments involving Kurds in northeastern Syria, describing them as an important step toward greater political integration.

“Türkiye has a chance to achieve lasting peace, and if it does, all these developments could also become a model for the Middle East,” she said.

Referring to recent statements by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander Mazloum Abdi, Doğan said her party welcomed efforts to resolve outstanding issues through dialogue.

“We congratulate everyone who has shown the courage to enable Syria to take these major steps,” she said, adding that efforts to resolve disputes through dialogue were particularly important.

Doğan also called for greater public participation in commissions established under Türkiye’s framework law. She said civil society organizations and individuals with relevant experience should be given opportunities to contribute to and monitor the process.

She argued that efforts to build peace and a democratic society should extend beyond government institutions and become a broader social process.

Doğan further stressed the need to clarify Abdullah Öcalan’s role in the ongoing process, saying he should be provided with the necessary conditions to fulfill what she described as a “heavy and historic responsibility.”

According to Doğan, Öcalan’s role should go beyond coordinating disarmament efforts and include contributing to the establishment of a lasting Kurdish-Turkish partnership.

Addressing reports about documents allegedly presented as notes from meetings with Öcalan, Doğan said statements from Öcalan, the DEM Party’s İmralı delegation and PKK leadership indicated that the leaked documents were not authentic.

She said questions surrounding Öcalan’s reported reference to a “conspiracy against me” should ultimately be answered by Öcalan himself.

“This is precisely why journalists should be able to meet with him,” Doğan said, arguing that direct access would allow journalists to ask questions about the peace process and reduce speculation.

Doğan added that the DEM Party delegation had not yet been able to visit Öcalan and therefore could not directly question him about the statement.

She reiterated the party’s call for journalists to be allowed to meet with Öcalan, saying direct questioning could help address public concerns and reduce what she described as provocative initiatives and risks.
