A man and a 13-year-old child were killed on Friday after a hand grenade exploded outside a courthouse in the Kurdish-majority city of Hasaka in northeastern Syria, according to Syrian state media.

The explosion occurred at around 9:30 a.m. local time outside the Palace of Justice in Hasaka, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported, citing a security source.

SANA said the blast was caused by a hand grenade but did not immediately provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the explosion or who may have been responsible.

Hasaka’s health director, Khalid al-Khalid, said the two victims died from injuries sustained in the blast. He identified them as a man in his thirties and a 13-year-old child.

Al-Khalid said the victims had not been identified because they were not carrying identification documents.

The incident occurred in Hasaka province, an area in northeastern Syria that has been at the center of political and security tensions involving Damascus and Kurdish-led authorities.
