Iraq's top judicial official, Faiq Zeidan, arrived in Tehran on Tuesday for a one-day official visit focused on strengthening judicial ties and discussing legal issues between Iraq and Iran.

Zeidan, president of Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council, is visiting Tehran at the invitation of Iran's judiciary chief, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei. According to Iraqi official media, the talks will address a number of judicial and legal files and seek to deepen cooperation between the two countries.

The visit comes only days after Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf travelled to Baghdad, where he met with Zeidan and discussed legal cooperation between Iraq and Iran.

Zeidan has previously travelled to Tehran several times to sign judicial cooperation agreements with Iranian officials. Previous discussions have included extradition arrangements, legal assistance and other agreements aimed at strengthening institutional ties between the two judicial systems.

The latest visit comes at a sensitive time for Iraq. Washington has launched a major new economic pressure campaign against Iran, while Baghdad is attempting to maintain its relations with both the United States and its neighbouring ally Iran.

The timing of Zeidan's visit highlights the difficult position facing the Iraqi government, which shares borders, trade links and extensive institutional ties with Iran while also maintaining important political and economic relations with Washington.

Iraqi officials have not disclosed detailed information about the specific legal files to be discussed during Zeidan's talks in Tehran.
