Preparations are currently being made for work on the second phase of the Erbil Wastewater Treatment Plant Project, constructed across 56 dunams of land, which will produce the capacity to treat 210,000 M3 of wastewater per day.

Around 14 percent of the Project has already been built (in the first phase period since April). The Plant is currently expected to be operational ahead of schedule, before the end of the planned 720-day implementation period. 

The Project, part of strategic efforts to protect the environment, restore water resources, and help create a cleaner and greener future for the capital, is being developed by a local workforce to the west of Erbil, across four implementation phases and 225 dunams of land.

The Project will eventually produce a total treatment capacity of 840,000 M3 per day, with a 22-kilometre pipeline network collecting (from six outlets across Erbil) and transporting wastewater to the treatment plant. Here, it will pass through more than 20 treatment stages and treatment with (biological, chemical and mechanical) processes consistent with international (environmental and health) standards.

Treated water, reused rather than discharged, will significantly irrigate the city’s agricultural land, green belt/areas, and parks. Treatment will also produce two other useful by-products, specifically chemical fertilizer (used to support and restore green areas) and gas (converted into energy through a dedicated power facility and then used to partially meet the Project’s own electricity needs).
