Iraq's Military Intelligence Directorate announced on Saturday the seizure of a number of drones, weapons and munitions during a security operation in Maysan province, as Baghdad continues efforts to bring all weapons under state control.

In a statement, the directorate said the operation was launched following precise intelligence information and under directives from the director of Military Intelligence. Units from the Intelligence and Security Section of the 22nd Special Forces Division carried out the operation, which resulted in the confiscation of several drones, mortar shells, rocket launchers and various types of hand grenades.

Authorities said all necessary legal procedures had been taken regarding the seized weapons and equipment.

The Military Intelligence Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing activities that violate the law and confiscating unlicensed weapons, saying such measures are aimed at strengthening security and stability in Maysan and other parts of Iraq.

The operation comes amid renewed efforts by the Iraqi state to regulate weapons held outside official security institutions. Iraqi Parliament Speaker Hiabat Halbousi said on Friday that a process to collect weapons under state authority is expected to begin at the end of September.

Speaking at the Baghdad Dialogue Forum, Halbousi described the issue as an Iraqi and constitutional matter that would proceed through legal channels. He also stressed that there was currently no confrontation between the state and armed groups, emphasizing that the process would be conducted through established legal procedures.
