Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) parliamentary bloc chief Shakhawan Abdullah on Wednesday reaffirmed the party’s support for Nineveh Governorate, saying Iraq is facing difficult political and economic circumstances.

Abdullah made the remarks during a visit by a KDP parliamentary delegation to Mosul, where he conveyed President Masoud Barzani’s greetings to the people of Nineveh and reiterated the Kurdistan Regional Government’s support for the governorate.

“Today, we conveyed the greetings and respect of President Barzani to Mosul Governorate and reaffirmed our support for the Kurdistan Regional Government for the governorate,” Abdullah said.

He described the delegation’s visit as a demonstration of the KDP’s continued support for Nineveh, which he said holds particular importance for the party.

Abdullah also highlighted Mosul’s recent history, particularly the devastation caused by the Islamic State (ISIS). He said the conflict had inflicted extensive damage on the city’s population, infrastructure and historical heritage, but praised the local administration’s efforts to overcome the crises and contribute to the city’s reconstruction.

Addressing Iraq’s broader economic situation, Abdullah said developments in Mosul could have a positive impact on the Kurdistan Region. He linked the country’s current economic difficulties to the wider conflict in the Middle East and its impact on Iraq’s oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the challenges, he said local governments could contribute to easing the country’s difficulties and supporting economic stability.

Nineveh Governor Abdulqader al-Dakhil welcomed the KDP delegation, describing its visit as an important expression of political and institutional support for the governorate.

He said Nineveh currently enjoys a high level of security and has developed into a place where the governorate’s different communities can meet and cooperate.

“The Kurdistan Democratic Party has provided very strong support for Nineveh, and this visit is also significant support for our governorate,” al-Dakhil said.

The governor also called for greater efforts by local governments to support the federal government in securing revenues amid Iraq’s economic difficulties.

He emphasized the importance of continued economic and security coordination between Nineveh and the Kurdistan Region, pointing to the strong social and economic connections between the two areas.

“Many people from Nineveh have their jobs and homes in the Kurdistan Region, while Kurdish citizens have also returned to their places of origin in Mosul. We are proud of this strong relationship,” al-Dakhil said.
