Iraq has demanded an official explanation from Iran after a drone attack targeted the private office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in Erbil province, describing the incident as a “serious precedent” that could further escalate regional tensions.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein raised the issue in a phone call with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Monday. Hussein condemned what he described as an unprovoked attack and called on Tehran to clarify its official position, including the parties responsible and their motives.

According to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, Hussein warned that the attack was particularly serious because it directly targeted the office of the Kurdistan Region’s prime minister, potentially threatening Iraq’s security and regional stability.

The call followed a statement by the Directorate General of Counter Terrorism, affiliated with the Kurdistan Region Security Council, which said that two explosive Hadid-110 drones had been launched from the Iranian side of the border. The drones reportedly targeted Barzani’s private office and the residence of the director of the Security Council in Pirmam district, Erbil province.

No casualties were reported in the attack.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the strikes in a statement on X, describing them as “reckless and unacceptable attacks” and warning that they represented a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, expressed surprise over the incident and said he had no information confirming that the drones had been launched from Iranian territory.

Araghchi also said there was no justification for such an attack given what he described as the positive and strong relations between the Iranian government and the Kurdistan Regional Government, particularly with the Kurdistan Region’s two main political parties.

The Iranian foreign minister further reaffirmed Tehran’s opposition to actions that could fuel escalation or undermine regional stability and pledged to issue an official statement clarifying Iran’s position on the incident.
