German authorities have arrested a 29-year-old Syrian man on suspicion of murdering two Kurdish men at a refugee accommodation center in the southern city of Augsburg, as investigators continue to examine the circumstances and motive behind the killings.

Police and prosecutors in Augsburg confirmed on Thursday that the suspect has been placed in custody on charges of intentional homicide after the bodies of two men were discovered inside a garbage container at the refugee facility on Monday afternoon.

According to Kurdish activists, one of the victims was a 39-year-old Kurd from Rojava in northeast Syria, while the second was a 54-year-old man from Slemani in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. German authorities have not officially identified the victims or confirmed their backgrounds.

Investigators said the bodies were found at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time after police received information suggesting that the 54-year-old victim may have been in danger. The alert was reportedly prompted by concerns raised by one of his relatives.

Authorities stated that the suspect lived at the same refugee accommodation and shared a room with the 54-year-old victim. Police have not disclosed the weapon believed to have been used or indicated a possible motive, emphasizing that the investigation remains ongoing.

In the aftermath of the incident, Augsburg municipal authorities evacuated the refugee center. According to the city administration, four residents were provided with emergency accommodation, while the remaining occupants were temporarily housed by relatives.

The refugee facility accommodated asylum seekers from several countries, including Somalia, Türkiye, Pakistan, Syria, and Iraq.

German authorities have not released additional details as the homicide investigation continues.
