At least 17 people were killed and 44 others injured after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone assault on Kyiv and the surrounding region early Wednesday, marking another deadly escalation in its campaign against the Ukrainian capital.

Air raid sirens sounded across Kyiv shortly after midnight as waves of Russian ballistic missiles and drones targeted residential neighborhoods, warehouses, and other civilian infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities reported damage at seven separate locations across the city.

According to Ukraine's Air Force, Russia launched a total of 115 drones and 28 high-speed missiles, including ballistic missiles. Officials said none of the missiles were intercepted during the attack, highlighting the growing challenge posed by Russia's expanding missile campaign.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for increased international military support, arguing that additional anti-ballistic missile systems could have prevented the casualties.

"Ballistic missile interceptors could have saved the lives of those killed today," Zelenskyy said, urging Ukraine's partners to accelerate deliveries of advanced air defense systems. He warned that delays in providing such equipment directly contribute to civilian deaths and widespread destruction.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a warehouse near the city center was completely destroyed, while emergency crews rescued two people from the rubble. Search-and-rescue operations continued amid fears that additional victims remained trapped beneath collapsed structures.

Although initial reports suggested that a 20-story apartment building had caught fire, city officials later clarified that the report was inaccurate. However, a major blaze erupted on the outskirts of the capital, and missile debris fell near residential buildings.

The attack also triggered an ammonia leak, prompting emergency services to contain the hazardous spill while firefighters battled multiple fires across the city.

Ukraine's military administration accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, describing the strikes as another violation of international humanitarian law.

The latest assault follows a series of intensified long-range attacks by both sides. On Saturday, Russian strikes on Kyiv and its suburbs killed 10 people and injured more than 30. On the same day, Ukraine claimed to have sunk a Russian vessel in the Black Sea using naval drones.

Military analysts note that Russia significantly increased its use of missiles during July, while Ukraine has expanded drone strikes targeting Russian oil, gas, logistics, and military infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities reported that Ukrainian drone attacks in the Moscow region on Tuesday killed five people and wounded ten others after striking warehouses linked to the retailer Wildberries. Moscow officials also said the city's air defense systems intercepted at least ten Ukrainian drones early Wednesday.
