KRG Completes Strategic Water Project Serving 35,000 Residents in 53 Barzan Villages
As part of continuing efforts to develop water infrastructure and provide better public services, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has completed another strategic water project in the Barzan region.
The project, on the Ava Sheen River, supplies clean drinking water (that meets international standards) to more than 35,000 residents in 53 villages in the region, helping to secure the water supply while strengthening essential services.
Implemented at a total cost of IQD 138.5 billion, the project was entirely delivered by a local workforce, reiterating the KRG’s confidence in the local water sector's ability to implement strategic projects.
Designed and constructed to high technical specifications, the project has the following features:
* Water production capacity: The treatment facility can, in accordance with international standards, filter and produce 1,200 cubic meters of clean water per hour.
* Transmission network: Water delivered to all villages through an extensive 540 km transmission network.
* Water storage: Reservoirs (five large and 54 smaller) receive and store water before equitably distributing it to households.
This vital project will enable village residents to remain in their ancestral communities, reducing migration to urban areas. In enabling residents to expand their agricultural and livestock farming activities, it will also provide an important boost to the regional economy.
