Iraqi Foreign Minister Probes Asset Recovery, Energy Ties, and Maritime Borders in High-Level Kuwait Visit

In the first official diplomatic mission to a Gulf state since the government of Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi took office, a senior Iraqi delegation led by Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein arrived in Kuwait to address a series of deep-seated financial, energy, and territorial issues.

According to an official government source speaking to Shafaq News, the broad bilateral talks focused extensively on recovering looted public assets, resolving maritime border demarcation disputes, and easing Iraq's domestic electricity crisis through shared energy resources.

A primary pillar of the discussions centered on freezing and retrieving illicitly obtained Iraqi funds hidden abroad. The two sides outlined cooperative legal strategies designed to clamp down on cross-border financial crimes, targeting suspect assets currently sitting in Kuwaiti financial institutions.

Focus Area
Core Diplomatic Strategy
Asset Freezing
Freezing funds transferred to Kuwaiti banks by Iraqi individuals accused of corruption.
Oversight Cooperation
Establishing direct lines between oversight authorities to track illicit money trails.
Shell Companies
Coordinating legal actions to identify and dismantle fraudulent shell entities.
Energy Cooperation and Regional Security

Addressing Iraq's chronic power generation deficits emerged as another vital component of the summit. To alleviate severe electricity shortages affecting the country, Kuwaiti officials expressed an explicit readiness to supply Iraq with natural gas.

The meetings also tackled delicate sovereignty issues, specifically focusing on maritime border demarcation in the northern Persian Gulf and shared security coordination. The Iraqi delegation emphasized Baghdad's desire to secure "mutually acceptable solutions" regarding outstanding territorial boundaries while prioritizing the protection and stability of bilateral relations.

Breakthrough in Diplomatic Goodwill: Hours after touching down in the capital, Foreign Minister Hussein secured the immediate release of Iraqi fishermen who had been detained by the Kuwaiti Coast Guard the previous week. The release followed an official humanitarian request presented directly by the visiting Iraqi delegation.

Foreign Minister Hussein was accompanied on the high-level mission by Iraq’s National Security Adviser, the Governor of Basra, and a contingent of senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signaling a coordinated push by the Al-Zaidi administration to build a unified strategy with its Gulf neighbors.
