Foreign Delegations Arrive in Tehran Ahead of Funeral for Iran's Supreme Leader
Official delegations from the Kurdistan Region, China, Russia, India, Iraq, Belarus, Turkmenistan, and several other countries have arrived in Tehran as Iran prepares to begin days of national mourning for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed in an airstrike at the start of the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran.
According to Iranian state television, foreign representatives landed in the Iranian capital on Friday to attend the official mourning ceremonies. An Indian delegation also paid its respects by walking past Ayatollah Khamenei's coffin, which has been placed at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla Mosque in Tehran.
Official mourning ceremonies are scheduled to begin on Saturday and continue until Monday, with millions of Iranians expected to participate. The coffin will remain in Tehran before being taken to the holy city of Qom and later to Iraq. The final burial is scheduled to take place on Thursday in Khamenei's hometown of Mashhad.
Iranian authorities have announced extensive security measures during the mourning period, including temporary closures of the country's airspace and major roads in the cities hosting the funeral processions.
Meanwhile, General Ahmad Vahidi, a senior commander in Iran's Revolutionary Guards and a key figure in Iran's negotiations with the United States, made his first public appearance in months. Vahidi had not been seen publicly since February 8, shortly before the outbreak of the conflict that escalated into the current war.
