Iraq’s Prime Minister to Visit United States with Business Delegation to Boost Investment Ties

The Iraqi Prime Minister, Ali Falih al-Zaidi, is preparing to make an official visit to the United States, accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes business leaders, private-sector representatives, and banking officials. The visit is intended to strengthen economic relations and expand investment cooperation between Baghdad and Washington.

Al-Zaidi made the announcement during a meeting with representatives of the private sector, including members of the Iraqi Economic Council and senior figures from private banks. He emphasized that the inclusion of business leaders reflects the government’s strategy to deepen partnerships with international investors and expand Iraq’s economic engagement.

Describing the private sector as a key partner in national development, Al-Zaidi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting business activity, removing barriers to investment, and addressing investor concerns. He also pledged intensified efforts to combat corruption and extortion, saying reform is essential to improving Iraq’s investment climate.

In a significant economic announcement, the prime minister revealed plans to establish a national development fund to finance private-sector projects, supported by a proposed $10 billion contribution from the Central Bank of Iraq. He added that citizens would be able to invest in the fund, with profits exempt from taxes, as part of efforts to broaden public participation in economic growth.

The initiative comes as Iraq seeks to diversify its economy beyond oil dependence and attract greater foreign investment. Energy cooperation, infrastructure development, and financial partnerships are expected to be central topics during discussions in the United States.

Although a date for the visit has not yet been announced, officials confirmed it will be Al-Zaidi’s first official foreign trip since taking office on 1 May 2026. The visit is expected to mark an early test of the government’s economic diplomacy and reform agenda.
