Israel Says It Killed Hamas Armed Wing Chief as U.S.-Iran Talks Show Signs of Progress

Israel’s military said Wednesday that it had killed Mohammed Odeh, the newly appointed head of Hamas’s armed wing in Gaza, in a targeted airstrike in Gaza City, only days after the killing of his predecessor, Izz al-Din al-Haddad.

According to the Israeli military, Odeh was a senior Hamas commander who previously led the group’s intelligence division and was allegedly involved in planning the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel. Israeli officials described him as one of the last remaining senior leaders of Hamas’s military structure in Gaza.

The strike reportedly hit a residential building in Gaza City’s Rimal neighborhood, killing several people and injuring more than 20 others, according to Gaza health officials. Hamas had not immediately issued an official statement confirming Odeh’s death.

The development comes as regional tensions remain high, even as diplomatic efforts appear to be gaining momentum. Washington and Tehran were reportedly moving closer toward an agreement aimed at reducing hostilities and preventing a broader regional conflict, despite ongoing violence in Gaza and Lebanon.
