NATO Chief Welcomes US Troop Deployment to Poland as Alliance Ministers Meet in Sweden

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte welcomed US President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy additional American troops to Poland, describing the move as an important contribution to regional security and NATO’s eastern defenses.

Speaking during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg, Sweden, Rutte said the deployment demonstrates Washington’s continued commitment to the alliance and to strengthening deterrence along NATO’s eastern flank amid ongoing security concerns in Europe.

The high-level gathering in Sweden focused on transatlantic security cooperation, defense spending, and the alliance’s long-term strategy in response to evolving threats across Europe.

Poland has remained a key strategic partner for NATO due to its geographic position bordering Ukraine and Belarus, with allied nations increasing their military presence in the region in recent years.

Meanwhile, Estonia’s foreign minister urged European countries to intensify their own defense efforts, stressing that Europe must take greater responsibility for its security alongside continued US support.

The Estonian official called for higher defense spending, accelerated military modernization, and stronger coordination among European allies to address growing security challenges.
