Germany Downplays US Troop Threat as Berlin Maintains Tough Border Policies

Friedrich Merz has dismissed recent threats by Donald Trump to withdraw American troops from Germany, stating that such rhetoric is “nothing new” and insisting that transatlantic relations remain stable despite ongoing tensions.

Speaking amid renewed debate over security cooperation, Merz emphasized that ties between Germany and the United States continue to be strong, even as political disagreements resurface. His comments come after Trump signaled plans to further reduce US military presence in Germany while increasing criticism of Berlin’s defense policies.

At the same time, Germany is maintaining a firm stance on migration. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed that border controls will remain in place despite a noticeable decline in asylum applications in recent months.

Dobrindt also defended the government’s controversial policy of deporting criminal offenders to Afghanistan, arguing that public safety must remain a top priority. The policy has sparked debate among rights groups and political opponents, who question the safety and legality of such returns.
