Trump Cancels Islamabad Engagement as Iran Rejects Direct Talks with US
U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he does not want American officials to “sit around talking about nothing” in Islamabad, signaling a halt to a planned diplomatic engagement in the Pakistani capital.
The remarks come amid rising tensions following Iran’s announcement that it will not engage in direct negotiations with the United States. Abbas Araghchi recently traveled to Pakistan, but no meeting took place between Iranian and U.S. representatives during the visit.
In a further indication of stalled diplomacy, U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are no longer expected to travel to Islamabad on Saturday, effectively canceling a potential round of indirect discussions.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, flights have resumed at Tehran’s main international airport, Imam Khomeini International Airport, after a period of disruption, signaling a degree of normalization in the country’s transportation sector.
