President Barzani Commemorates Victims of 1974 Qaladze and Sulaimani Massacre
On the anniversary of the April 24, 1974 massacre in Qaladze and at Sulaimani University, President Masoud Barzani issued a solemn statement honoring the victims and condemning the actions of the former Iraqi regime.
In his message, Barzani described the attack as “a clear indication of the chauvinistic and brutal policies” pursued against the people of southern Kurdistan at the time. The assault, which targeted civilians and students, resulted in the martyrdom and injury of hundreds, marking one of the most tragic chapters in the region’s modern history.
He emphasized that the massacre was not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of systemic violence carried out by the former regime against Kurdish civilians. According to Barzani, such events remain deeply embedded in the collective memory of the Kurdish people and serve as a reminder of past injustice and suffering.
Marking the anniversary, Barzani extended his “salutes to the martyrs of that catastrophe and all the martyrs of Kurdistan,” reaffirming the importance of remembrance and national unity.
