Former Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi Dies After Injuries From US-Israeli Strike in Tehran

Former Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi (1944–2026) has died from severe injuries sustained during a US-Israeli airstrike that targeted his residence in Tehran earlier this month, according to Iranian state media.

Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported Friday that Kharrazi was “martyred a few hours ago” after the April 1 strike carried out by what the outlet described as the “Zionist-American enemy.” The report cited confirmation from Kharrazi’s relatives.

In a statement posted on X, Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref expressed condolences, describing Kharrazi as a “symbol of Iran’s diplomatic rationality.” He condemned the attack as evidence of “the enemy’s fear of the power of our logic and dignified diplomacy.”

Kharrazi, 81, had a diplomatic career spanning nearly four decades. Since 2006, he served as head of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations (SCFR), a body linking Iran’s clerical leadership, government, and military institutions.

Before leading the council, he served as Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York from 1989 to 1997. He was later appointed foreign minister (1997–2005) under reformist president Mohammad Khatami. After leaving the ministry, Kharrazi became a senior adviser to Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

His death comes amid an escalating conflict following the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran that began on February 28. The operation, named Operation Epic Fury, has reportedly targeted more than 13,000 sites across Iran, according to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), focusing on facilities considered imminent security threats.

Kharrazi is the latest senior Iranian figure reported killed during the campaign. Earlier casualties include former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed on the first day of the offensive.

Other high-profile figures killed in recent weeks include Ali Larijani (1958–2026), secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), the country’s highest decision-making body on foreign policy and security.

Iranian authorities confirmed Larijani’s death shortly after the Israeli military announced it had “eliminated” him along with Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Basij paramilitary force under the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
