UN Security Council to Vote on Bahrain Proposal to Secure Strait of Hormuz as Trump Threatens Further Strikes on Iran and Oil Prices Surge
The United Nations Security Council is preparing to vote on a proposal submitted by the Kingdom of Bahrain that would authorize countries to use a wide range of “defensive measures” to secure the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route.
The proposal comes amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran following recent military strikes and threats of further escalation in the region.
According to diplomatic sources, the Bahrain-sponsored resolution would permit international forces to take protective military and security actions to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump issued stark warnings that American military operations against Iran could intensify. Speaking to reporters, Trump stated that the U.S. military “has not even started destroying what’s left in Iran.”
He further indicated that future strikes could focus on key infrastructure, saying potential targets could include bridges and later electric power plants if the conflict escalates.
Amid fears of a wider regional conflict, global oil markets have reacted sharply. U.S. oil prices have climbed to more than $111 per barrel, driven by concerns that fighting could disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
