President Barzani Condemns Drone Attack on Kurdistan Region, Calls on Baghdad to Act
President Masoud Barzani has strongly condemned repeated drone and rocket attacks on the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, urging the federal government in Baghdad to take decisive action against armed groups responsible for the assaults.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Barzani said the Kurdistan Region has never been part of the conflicts and wars affecting the wider Middle East. However, he warned that certain armed groups continue to target the region and the forces of the Peshmerga without justification, threatening the safety and stability of its population.
According to the statement, the Kurdistan Region and Peshmerga headquarters have been attacked dozens of times in recent years with drones and rockets, causing casualties among civilians. Since the start of the current regional tensions, he said, more than 450 rocket and drone attacks have been launched against Kurdish territory and military positions.
Barzani also revealed that his own headquarters had been targeted five times during this period. Kurdish authorities, he said, had chosen not to publicize these incidents in order to avoid provoking public anger or anxiety.
The latest attack occurred on Saturday, when a drone targeted the residence of the president of the Kurdistan Region in the city of Duhok. Barzani emphasized that the issue goes beyond a single residence or political figure, stressing that every part of Kurdistan and every Kurdish home holds equal value.
“These attacks represent clear hostility, grave injustice, and a blatant violation against the Kurdistan Region,” Barzani said, adding that such threats cannot be resolved merely through condemnation statements or diplomatic contacts.
He called on the Iraqi federal authorities to take a firm position, urging them either to acknowledge their inability to restrain the armed groups involved or to intervene decisively to protect the state and prevent further attacks.
Barzani concluded by reaffirming that the people of Kurdistan would continue to defend their peaceful aspirations and their political rights. “No threat, aggression, or enemy will be able to break the will of the people of Kurdistan,” he said.
