Iraq Arrests Four Suspects Over Rocket Attack on Base in Northeastern Syria
The Iraqi government has announced the arrest of four individuals suspected of carrying out a rocket attack targeting a military facility in northeastern Syria’s Hasaka province, according to an official statement issued by the office of Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani.
The statement confirmed that Iraqi security forces, backed by intelligence units, acted quickly to identify and detain those involved in the attack.
“Our security forces, supported by intelligence efforts, moved swiftly and succeeded in arresting four of the perpetrators,” the statement said. The suspects have been handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities as part of an ongoing investigation.
In a separate statement, Sabah al-Numan, the military spokesperson for the Iraqi Prime Minister, explained that the rockets were fired by what he described as an “illegal group.” According to the report, several missiles were launched toward Syrian territory from the border area of Rabia district using a Kia vehicle as a mobile launch platform.
The rockets were reportedly aimed at the Kharab al-Jir base, a military installation located south of Qamishli in Hasaka Province near the Syrian-Iraqi border. The base had previously hosted forces from the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve but is currently operated jointly by Syrian government forces and Kurdish security forces in northeastern Syria.
Officials noted that these arrests mark the first detentions announced in Iraq linked to the regional conflict that escalated on February 28, involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
