President Masoud Barzani Commemorates Halabja Victims, Calls Chemical Attack a Historic Crime

Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and former President of the Kurdistan Region, issued a statement marking the anniversary of the Halabja chemical attack, describing the incident as one of the most horrific crimes committed against the people of Kurdistan.

In his message, Barzani stated that the chemical bombardment of the Kurdish city of Halabja in Iraq represented an extreme act of injustice and a brutal crime against the Kurdish population. He emphasized that the attack remains one of the rare cases in modern history in which a state used chemical weapons against its own citizens.

Barzani noted that despite the severity of the tragedy, there are still individuals in Iraq who oppose the rights of the Kurdish people. He stressed that the Halabja tragedy, along with other past atrocities committed against Kurds, constitutes a historical and legal responsibility for Iraq.

According to Barzani, this responsibility requires recognition of the crimes and the provision of compensation to the people of Kurdistan.

On the anniversary of the attack, Barzani sent his greetings and respect to the souls of the victims of Halabja and to all the martyrs of Kurdistan, honoring their memory and reaffirming the importance of remembering the tragedy.

The chemical attack on Halabja in 1988 remains one of the most tragic events in Kurdish history, symbolizing the suffering endured by the Kurdish people during the final phase of the Anfal campaign carried out under the regime of Saddam Hussein.
