Masrour Barzani: Halabja Remains a Wound in Kurdish History on the 38th Anniversary of the Halabja Chemical Attack

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday issued a message on the 38th anniversary of the genocidal chemical bombardment of Halabja. The following is the full text of his message:

On the 38th anniversary of the chemical bombardment and mass killings in the city of Halabja, we solemnly commemorate the innocent martyrs of this great atrocity committed against the people of Kurdistan, with the aim of extermination and genocide against the Kurds.

The chemical attack on Halabja remains a deep wound in our history and a clear and unmistakable symbol of the oppression and violence inflicted on the citizens of Kurdistan.

This brutal crime must never fade from the memory and conscience of the people of Kurdistan and of all of humanity. The citizens of Kurdistan must also remember that the achievements attained today in the Kurdistan Region are the result of the blood of our proud martyrs, and must be protected in every way.

On this solemn occasion, we once again remind the federal government that it must uphold its legal and constitutional responsibility and, in a proper manner, provide reparations for the families of the martyrs of Halabja, the casualties of the Anfal genocide operation, and all the other victims of the former Iraqi regime.

With utmost respect and reverence for the pure souls of the martyrs of Halabja and all the martyrs of Kurdistan.

Masrour Barzani
